Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is medication that reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken as prescribed. PrEP is available as a daily pill or as a long-acting injection—depending on what works best for your body and your life.

Yes! Injectable PrEP is available here, and it’s easier to start than most people think.
Many patients assume injectable PrEP takes months to access. At Bywater, most people can start the process online and receive medication within about a week. We offer Apretude® and Yeztugo™.
Apretude® (Cabotegravir)
Our most commonly used injectable PrEP option
Apretude is the first FDA-approved long-acting injectable for HIV prevention, manufactured by ViiV Healthcare. It’s given as an intramuscular injection every two months and eliminates the need for a daily pill.
We recommend that patients check their coverage first, before setting up an appointment at Bywater. Apretude is covered by most insurance plans. To explore coverage:

Once you’ve confirmed your coverage, contact our office to set up an appointment. You can expect your first appointment to include initial labs and STI screening, and a discussion about injection timing and readiness. In most cases, your first injection happens during your first visit.
Yeztugo™ (Lenacapavir)
The Newest long-acting injectable PrEP option given every six months.
Yeztugo is is the latest FDA-approved long-acting injectable for HIV prevention, manufactured by Gilead Sciences (who also manufacture Descovy). It has a unique mechanism of action and side effect profile to consider.

HIV Treatment

Bywater Health offers comprehensive HIV treatment led by clinicians with advanced training in HIV medicine. Chuck Williamson, NP, completed specialty training at UCSF, and both he and Chris Perdue, NP are members of the American Academy of HIV Medicine. Our care is evidence-based, affirming, and responsive to each patient’s needs.

Long-Acting Injectable HIV Treatment, Available Now
Cabenuva (cabotegravir/rilpivirine) is a long-acting injectable HIV treatment for patients who prefer not to take daily pills.
Bywater Health has Cabenuva available now, and many patients are able to start within days, not months.

DoxyPEP for STI Prevention
DoxyPEP is a post-exposure antibiotic strategy that reduces the risk of certain bacterial STIs. Taken after sex, based on provider guidance, it helps prevent chlamydia, syphilis, and, to a lesser extent, gonorrhea.
